Geoscientist at the University of Bayreuth receives award for outstanding merits in his field
University of Bayreuth, Presse release No. 161/2022 - 4 October 2022
Prof. Dr. Hans Keppler, Director of the Bavarian Research Institute of Experimental Geochemistry and Geophysics (BGI) at the University of Bayreuth, has been awarded the Abraham Gottlob Werner Medal in silver by the German Mineralogical Society (DMG) for his outstanding scientific achievements. The medal is the highest scientific award of the DMG.
In his research work, Prof. Dr. Hans Keppler, who holds the Chair of Experimental Geochemistry and Geophysics at the University of Bayreuth, has for many years been concerned with the simulation and analysis of geological processes by means of high-pressure and high-temperature experiments in the laboratory. The resulting findings, which he has published in internationally acclaimed studies, concern, for example, the chemical composition of the earth, mass transports in Earth's interior, causes and consequences of volcanic eruptions, or interactions of aqueous fluids with minerals, rocks and melts.
Prof. Dr. Hans Keppler has received numerous awards for his internationally renowned research work including the Heinz Maier Leibnitz Prize (1992), the Gerhard Hess Prize of the German Research Foundation (1995), the Victor Moritz Goldschmidt Prize of the German Mineralogical Society (1996), the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize of the DFG (2001), and the Bowen Prize of the American Geophysical Union (2011), which is considered the highest award in the field of volcanology, geochemistry and petrology. The Bayreuth geoscientist is involved in a range of important scientific organizations: He is a member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities and the National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina, as well as a Fellow of the Geochemical Society and European Association of Geochemistry, the American Geophysical Union and the Mineralogical Society of America.
